The Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence salutes Brenda Cowan Elementary and SCAPA at Bluegrass for earning Family Friendly Schools Certification this fall. The state-level recognition for 25 schools and early care centers acknowledges their efforts to build strong, effective partnerships with the community. These schools have been innovative and energetic in making families a valued part of their team, enriching the learning experience for all students.
The schools certified this semester will be recognized in Frankfort during Family Engagement in Education Week, Nov. 18-22.
As part of the certification process, a team of families, teachers, and administrators use a self-assessment tool to evaluate the school’s family engagement performance. They rate their own practices, identify key areas for improvement, and integrate new activities designed to elevate their family-friendly rating. After the applications are scored, the Prichard Committee announces a list of honorees in the fall and in late spring.
The first in Fayette County Public Schools to earn the Family Friendly designation was Lafayette High School in 2022. SCAPA at Bluegrass, Breckinridge, Brenda Cowan, Lansdowne, Picadome, and Yates elementaries have since followed suit.
