SCAPA’s Mefford Picked as Kids’ Champion

Fayette County Public Schools has selected Eddie Mefford, the lead custodian for SCAPA at Bluegrass, as the Kids’ Champion for April 2026. Superintendent Demetrus Liggins surprised him with the award at school this week, and the school board will salute him at their April 27 action meeting. 

Each month during the school year, our district recognizes an outstanding member of Team FCPS who makes a real difference in students’ lives. A Kids’ Champion displays exceptional dedication to students and embodies the key characteristics of innovation, advocacy, empathy, knowledge, and a positive attitude. 

Excerpts from the colleague who nominated Mefford:

“Eddie brings a unique creative energy to our hallways that transcends his role as lead custodian. As a former SCAPA student and art major, he uses our sequin board as a canvas for interactive installations. He doesn’t just create art for the students; he teaches them the technique of ‘drawing’ using two-tone sequins, transforming a simple sensory wall into a collaborative art lesson. This innovation makes the school environment feel like a living gallery, proving that engagement and relevance can happen anywhere. 

“Eddie advocates for students by treating their environment as a reflection of their worth. He often notices the small things students need, like better workspace lighting or a more welcoming common area, and serves as their voice to the administration, ensuring their physical learning environment meets their emotional and social needs.

"Having walked these same halls as our students, Eddie possesses a deep, lived understanding of our students' perspectives. He relates to their pressures and triumphs with a quiet, supportive presence. Whether a student is having a rough morning or celebrating a win, Eddie meets them where they are.

"Eddie is more than a lead custodian. He is a mentor, an artist, and a guardian of our school’s spirit. He is a true Kids' Champion who proves that every interaction is an opportunity to teach.”
